If you have carried extra weight to the British Airways, you will be charged. The charges based on weight are as follows
Extra and overweight baggage
Don’t get caught out at the airport – plan ahead to save time and money on all your baggage needs.
Extra bags on British Airways, OpenSkies and BA CityFlyer
- Every person over two years can pay for up to ten additional bags as well as their free checked baggage allowance e.g. If your free checked baggage allowance is one bag, you can pay to take up to ten additional bags to have a total of eleven bags.
- Each extra bag needs to meet the same size and weight limits as a standard checked bag.
- The cheapest price for extra bags is on ba.com, except for a few routes where you need to pay at the airport. You can pay online at any time before you check in, otherwise you will need to pay at the airport.
- At many airports, including London Heathrow, Gatwick and North America, you can only pay using a card. Please check with a member of our staff at the airport to find out if options are available for converting cash to a payment card.

- To change your extra bags, you will need to first cancel your purchase and then make a new one. The new purchase will be made using the current extra bag prices.
- Purchasing transactions are not complete until they have been authorised by your payment provider and we have sent you a confirmation email.
- Unless otherwise stated, we will only make a refund to the payment method you have originally used to purchase the extra bag.
Overweight bags with British Airways, OpenSkies and BA CityFlyer
Hand baggage
If your hand baggage is over the weight limit, you will need to check it in and it will count towards your checked baggage allowance. If this then takes you over your free checked baggage allowance, or if you are travelling on a hand baggage only (Basic) fare, you will need to pay for extra baggage at the airport rate.
Checked baggage
If your checked bag weighs more than your allowance you may be charged extra at the airport:
Bag weight | Charge per bag |
23-32kg (51-70lb) | 65 GBP / 75 EUR / 100 USD / 100 CAD per overweight bag and one-way journey.
If you are leaving from a country that uses a different local currency, the GBP amount will be converted to the local currency. Payment by cash may incur a commission charge. |
Over 32kg (70lb) | Not possible to check in; you will need to ship your bags as freight or cargo.
