David Kenani Maraga is Kenya’s Chief Justice. He was appointed to the position by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2015 after the Judicial Service Commission forwarded his name to the president.
Before his appointment to his current position, Maraga was the Presiding Court of Appeal Judge in Kisumu from October 2014 to July 2016 where he made 1,250 judgments thereby clearing case backlogs. His performed his work with diligence and determination, which attracted praises from fellow judges and lawyers.
Judge Maraga attended Maranda High School. At this school, he demonstrated his leadership skills after he was given the responsibility of being a class prefect.
After Maranda,he joined the University of Nairobi where he graduated with a Bachelor of laws Degree from the University of Nairobi in 1977.He proceeded to pursue a masters in Law from the same university. He also possess and a post-graduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law in 1978.
Maraga is one of the few judges who are described as “clean”, meaning that he never received a bribe as a magistrate and a judge-no single individual has ever complained of being asked for a bribe from the judge. His judgments are always fair to both the accused and the complainant.
The Chief Justice will succeed Willy Mutunga, and according to the SDA believer, his working and resting days will remain as stated during the interview with JSC-he will not work on Saturday.
Maraga’s salary as the Chief Justice will be Ksh 1,2 million per month, excluding allowances and other benefits. Apart from the salary, the Chief Justice will be given a mansion at Runda, official cars and security.
